Well, W.C., we spend all spend money while thousands starve. Spending money on something that at least thematizes the fact that thousands starving and that dealing with it is complex is exactly one more thing to address that than you've done.

So, what have you spent money on while thousands starve?

This was a wonderful game - very high quality for something like this. I was especially pleased to see that it was easy to play, and also successful at teaching the player about a few things, such as what foods are important, where investment is more valuable, etc. Great stuff!

(for all non-Spanish speakers, Francisco is complaining about the lack of a non-English version and also the lack of a Linux version). I have talked to the developers, so I got a bit of information. About Linux, as you can see from my post, I'd have loved to have seen both an open-source version, and also a Linux version. However, the development platform that the chose is Director and that makes a lot of sense for many reasons. There are different ways to make a game, but you have to keep in mind the costs and time involved. Director is a popular dev platform, so it's faster and easier to create something with it. Making games is about making choices and you cannot always do what you want. It's sad, but it's the way it is. Not that I want to be conservative, but as a developer I know that you should choose on which aspects you want to take risks and on which you cannot.
However, a bit of info that may not be obvious is that this game is targeted to children from rich countries, so they can learn about the WFP's work. While I love to see more and more educational environments working with Linux, I don't think it's a big problem to launch the game just for PC and Mac, given the target audience. The same goes for the English language. They have planned to translate it into other languages, but localization is a very expensive and time-consuming task and I understand why they launched just with English.
Again, I agree with your points, but I just hope that we agree that these are small concerns (and the languaging problem may get fixed eventually). Overall, this is a wonderful game and that is what we should focus our attention on. If the game sucked big time, but was avaialble in every language and every platform, we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Peace keepers are still soldiers and soldiers, whether "keeping peace" or occupying Iraq are still soldiers who were trained for aggression and limited thought. WTF??? This game, if well dispersed, will be a key point in the childhood memories of millions of people and it opens up the window for games to be a whole lot more than just retarded shooting games like Half-Life, Halo and GTA. This helps move video games from simple entertainment into the realm of art. Right on. Do they get extra points for taking bribes and raping the locals??? Get a fucking clue!

Looks like a regular video game with a lesson plan tacked on. Minigames? Voice-overs? Helicopter rescues? How come I never learned anything about the WFP when I played Wario Ware? Or Diablo II? Or Helicopter Rescue on Addicting Games.com?

If a normal video game is a simulation (GTA simulates driving, Half-life simulates killing aliens. Katamari Damacy simulates rolling clay balls over stuff) then,
an educational game could be defined as a totally realistic simulation of something. Or, a simulation of something that represents your view on it. (Simulating George Bush as the Anti-Christ shows you think he's immoral, for example)

In reality, working for the WFP seems like a very stressful, difficult, long, tedious job that is immensly rewarding in the end. Somehow, I don't think this lends itself well to minigames. It seems more like a MMO (ex. Everquest). Or a Sim where you control the WFP. Or anything difficult and time consuming but rewarding. Maybe, some game developers could shadow/interview the CEO or Director of the WFP and get a feel of what it's really like to save a country from famine. Or, they could watch aid-workers and model a game based on their experiences. Just don't slap a lecture and a video game together and say "Educanamaganational!!"

I found the bean mixing very challenging.

One odd thing is that they only have one version for Mac, and it appears to be the "classic" version (or at least, the self-extracting archive was a classic application). Director will easily export to OSX, so why not offer an OSX version?

If you're in contact with the developers, you might want to mention that, or at least have 'em put up some system requirements.

CC: The game is available natively for Mac Os X. Actually, that is the only version available. What may be happening to you is that the file is being uncompressed under MacOs9 because of some faulty application association. But rest assured that Food Force works only on Mac Os X.
