Hothead Zidane newsgame
July 10, 2006 - by Gonzalo Frasca

Et oui, mes amis, le jour de gloire n'est pas arrivé!:( The final match of the World Cup is always a must see. Yesterday's was not great and, even though France deserved to win, soccer is not about who deserves to win but about who scores more goals. I was supporting France in a quite schizoid decision (my father's family is of Italian descent but my mother's is French).

Anyway, the World Cup is over, long live the World Cup. If you watched the match, you may have witnessed the shameful performance by Zidane (one of the greatest soccer players ever). Close to the end of the match, he gave a quite spectacular headbutt to an Italian adversary. It was Zidane's last match (he's retiring). He had the chance to leave in glory and instead he ended up losing and being shown the red card. I feel sorry for him but that kind of behavior does not support any excuse. Anyway, hot from the press, here's a little newsgame (new link) that was put together in a rush (probably by an italian fan, since it is signed with an Italian email account).

The game was certainly put together in a few hours. The author did not even bother to put a challenge nor a score. The graphics are crude. Still, I would bet my baguette that it is currently the hottest viral Flash game on the net. Another proof that players do not just seek AAA, multi-million dollar projects to have fun. They also want something that speaks to them. And this crude little game certainly does. (Thanks Tincho for the link!)

Y'a un français dans l'équipe de water cooler ?!

Comment from Gonzalo Frasca on July 10, 2006

Bien sur, jypegue! Watercoolergames is half American (Ian) half French, half Uruguayan (Gonzalo) and half everything else (our readers). Our blood is such a cocktail...
Ian is not French but he refused to eat so-called Freedom Fries as an act of support to the land of Jacques Tati. Ian trully is l'Ami Américain ;)

Thanks!

the game was picked up by a major italian newspaper
http://www.corriere.it/Primo_Piano/Sport/2006/07_Luglio/10/pop_zidane.shtml

The original server was suspended because there was to much traffic.

The Net is on fire with headbutts. Here's a simple but cute game: http://obacht.blogspot.com/2006/07/zidane-games.html

And here's another but it has horrible controls, at least on my Mac
http://www.sop-hamburg.de/zinedine/

And of course, sports can become political. Check this out this funny animation of Zidane and Castro: http://zidaneownsfidelcastro.ytmnd.com/
