Out Overfishin' April 1, 2008 - by Ian Bogost Ocean Survivor is an advocacy game created by Conserve Our Ocean Legacy, a nonprofit campaign to reduce the rate of bluefin tuna decline in US waters. The game is simple but well done. The player takes the role of a swimming bluefin tuna. The core mechanic is borrowed from the web-classic Helicopter Game: hold the mouse button to make the fish swim up, release it to let the fish fall. Instead of avoiding abstract obstacles, you must avoid the hooks and nets of various types and sizes lowered by trawlers at the surface of the water. The topology of nets and hooks is generated anew with each play, which makes the game interesting to play a few times. This introduces some problems as well, as the level generator doesn't dynamically adjust the difficulty as the game proceeds, which would have been a nice addition. The game attempts to channel people into an online petition, a process that I doubt draws much action. Nevertheless, it's a solid, simple political game, with a mechanic that is coupled to the issue it portrays. That's something we haven't seen the likes of lately. POST A COMMENT
